2.30 - 3.30pm — Sue Dengate: Additives and reading labels
Our food has changed dramatically in the last 30 years with the introduction of ultra-processed foods that now form about 50% of the average diet in NZ and Australia. Additives in these foods – and some natural chemicals in what we think of as “healthy” foods - can cause problems for some people ranging from headaches, itchy skin, irritable bowel symptoms or asthma to behavioural issues such as irritability, restlessness, inattention, insomnia, anxiety or depression and others including arthritis, heart palpitations, seizures and female infertility. Due to the so-called “clean label trend”, understanding food labels has become more difficult.
Sue Dengate, based near Sydney, is a psychology graduate and former high school teacher who became interested in the effects of food additives after the birth of her first child 40 years ago. Since then, Sue has focused on the effects of food chemicals on behaviour, health and learning ability in both children and adults. She is author of the bestselling Fed Up series. Sue, helped by her husband Dr Howard Dengate, a food scientist, runs the Food Intolerance Network through the website www.fedup.com.au which has had over 14 million visits. Sue was an Australian of the Year finalist in 2009.
